Brings advanced motion capture technology to CERN
Qualisys
Qualisys provides CERN with a high-precision optical motion capture system that enables accurate tracking of autonomous ground robots and flying devices operating in areas where radiation makes human access difficult or impossible.
The collaboration with CERN demonstrates how long-term engagement och technical excellence and strategic networking can create new business opportunities in the international Big Science market.
The collaboration demonstrates how Swedish expertise in precision measurement technology can contribute to solving complex challenges at one of the world’s leading research infrastructures.
Supporting robotics in challenging environments
As CERN expands the use of autonomous robots for inspection and maintenance in radiation environments, reliable positioning data becomes essential. To meet these requirements, CERN selected Qualisys’ motion capture technology following an extensive technical evaluation.
“We had detailed technical discussions with CERN, and they concluded that our system met the technical specification,” says Mathias Bankay, Key Account Manager for Qualisys in Switzerland.
The system provides highly accurate, real-time tracking of both the position and orientation of robots, enabling safe and efficient operation where direct human intervention is limited.
Delivering an integrated solution
The delivery comprises 16 high-precision motion capture cameras together with software, installation and training.
A key strength of Qualisys is that both hardware and software are developed entirely in-house. This enables the company to deliver a fully integrated solution offering sub-millimetre accuracy, very low latency and high reliability for demanding research applications.
The same technology is widely used in robotics, autonomous vehicles, biomechanics and advanced industrial research, making it well suited to the challenging environment at CERN.
Qualisys has been a member of Big Science Sweden since 2024 and has actively participated in networking activities and meetings with international research facilities. Through Big Science Sweden, the company has strengthened its understanding of the Big Science market, established valuable contacts and gained insights into procurement opportunities and future technology needs.
