Freemelt wins new F4E contract following major fusion manufacturing order

Big Science Sweden member company Freemelt has won a EUR 300,000 development contract with Fusion for Energy (F4E), expanding its business in fusion energy. The new contract follows a manufacturing order from F4E with a base value of SEK 55 million.

Freemelt is specialising in metal additive manufacturing, materials development and the production of components in tungsten and other refractory metals.

Freemelt won the contract through a competitive procurement process. It builds on the company’s previous work with F4E on tungsten development and materials research. The project is part of F4E’s Technology Development Programme, which helps prepare key fusion technologies for industrial production. The aim is to make production more efficient and reduce the cost of manufacturing tungsten-based fusion components. The contract extends Freemelt’s business with F4E, which now includes both development projects and industrial manufacturing.

“The contract is an important validation of our expertise in tungsten processing and additive manufacturing. It demonstrates our ability to compete for and win strategically important development projects that support the future industrialisation of fusion energy technologies,” says Daniel Gidlund, CEO of Freemelt. The earlier manufacturing order covers more than 30,000 tungsten-based components for the JT-60SA fusion programme in Japan. Including options, the order could be worth up to SEK 84 million.

Together, the contracts show how specialist expertise can help suppliers win business at different stages of a research facility’s development. Freemelt will both deliver components for an existing programme and continue improving manufacturing methods for future use in fusion energy.

“Congratulations to Freemelt on securing another contract with F4E. At Big Science Sweden, we help Swedish companies identify business opportunities and build long-term relationships with research facilities. Seeing Freemelt win both development and manufacturing contracts is exactly the kind of progress we aim to support,” says Max Collins, Industrial Liaison Officer (ILO) for F4E/ITER at Big Science Sweden.
