Onsala Space Observatory marked 75 years at the forefront of radio astronomy
The guests are arriving for the day – greeted by just the right amount of sunshine.
Onsala 15 May 2025
The day began at Chalmers Johanneberg Campus with a visit to the Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD), followed by talks and guided tours at the observatory in Onsala, accompanied by live, space-themed music. Many inspiring speakers took the stage to share memories and stories from their time at the observatory.

Gunnar Elgered, Professor Emeritus at Onsala Space Observatory, shares the story of the Würzburg antennas at Onsala.
Susanne Aalto, Professor of Astronomy and Plasma Physics, and Deputy President and Deputy CEO of Chalmers University of Technology, said:
“This is my scientific home. The experiences I had here as a young researcher shaped both my career and my perspective on science.”
John Conway, Director of Onsala Space Observatory since 2013, said:
“We are entering a golden era for radio astronomy. I still remember being newly hired and tasked with climbing up and down the telescopes to make adjustments – despite my fear of heights. Visitors are often amazed at how much has been achieved here with such a small and dedicated team.”
Phil Diamond, Director-General of the SKA Observatory, shared memories from his early postdoc years at Onsala and welcomed Sweden’s decision to become SKAO’s 13th member state.
SKAO and Onsala
Sweden has now signed the convention to become a member of the SKA Observatory (SKAO). With telescopes under construction in Australia and South Africa, SKAO will soon operate the most powerful radio telescope in the world. Onsala Space Observatory has long been a driving force behind Sweden’s involvement in the SKA collaboration.
Big Science Sweden
Oscar Isoz, at Big Science Sweden, was also present and highlighted the strong position of Swedish industry:
“I see first-hand how collaboration opens doors for partnerships between researchers and Swedish companies to deliver cutting-edge technology. Just look at Onsala Space Observatory and its partners – Swedish companies are highly competitive in this arena,” said Oscar Isoz.
