Sweden’s nuclear energy future – fission, fusion, and strategic leadership

Sweden has the opportunity to play a stronger role in the rapidly evolving fusion and fission landscape. As the organization Fusion for Energy (F4E), expands its scope and new industrial needs arise, there are growing opportunities for Swedish companies and research institutes to contribute.

Meeting gathered key stakeholders

On 26 August, Big Science Sweden hosted a webinar that brought together industry leaders, experts, and government representatives to discuss the future of nuclear energy in Sweden. The focus was on new materials for both fission and fusion technologies.

Opening the session, Carl Berglöf, National Nuclear Coordinator, presented the government’s ambition to add 2,500 megawatts of new nuclear capacity by 2035. He underlined that the strategy is to enable favourable conditions for market investment, rather than depending on direct government funding.

European perspective on fusion and fission

From a European perspective, Stefan Wikman of F4E highlighted the development of fusion reactors and the need for advanced materials, and the agency’s role in supporting innovation in both fission and fusion. Need for collaboration and strategy

The discussions also addressed regulatory frameworks, R&D support, and the importance of reducing political and project risks. Participants noted Sweden’s strong capabilities in nuclear technologies, but underlined the need for better marketing and closer collaboration among suppliers.
