EKA secures new contract with CERN following AIMday
Jörgen Rogstam, Managing Director at EKA.
Sustainable solutions for cooling systems
After a successful collaboration in 2024, the Swedish company EKAnalys AB (EKA) has now been awarded a new contract with CERN, Europe’s leading particle physics laboratory. The new assignment focuses on investigating and recommending improvements for five of CERN’s ageing cooling systems. This is a crucial step in the laboratory’s ambition to switch to energy-efficient and sustainable solutions using natural refrigerants.
Maintaining the momentum
This continued collaboration was initiated through Big Science Sweden's AIMday Big Science Technology event in 2024, where EKA made their first connection with CERN.
“Being awarded a follow-up contract at CERN is a strong confirmation of the value we can offer,” says Jörgen Rogstam, Managing Director at EKA. “It’s an exciting challenge to work with such a demanding facility, and we’re proud to contribute to the shift towards more sustainable cooling solutions” he continues.
During the first project, the EKA team conducted a comprehensive on-site inventory and engaged with CERN’s internal stakeholders to understand both the technical requirements and broader sustainability goals. The upcoming project, awarded through an international call for tenders, builds on that foundation and will deliver detailed recommendations that pave the way for future upgrades. The new assignment begins in August 2025, with first deliverables due in September.
More opportunities ahead
As demand grows across the Big Science sector for climate-smart engineering and sustainable systems, EKA is showing how specialized Swedish know-how can lead the way.
“This is just the beginning of a large and ongoing effort, and there will be many more opportunities ahead for Swedish companies with the right expertise” says Fredrik Engelmark, Industrial Liaison Officer to CERN at Big Science Sweden.
