The TomoWISE Frontend (FE) is the interface between the TomoWISE beamline and the MAX IV 3GeV storage ring. Synchrotron radiation (SR) is generated by the TomoWISE Insertion Devices. The TomoWISE Undulator and TomoWISE 3-pole-wiggler (3PW) are both located in the straight sections of Achromat 07 of the 3 GeV storage ring. The Frontend allows synchrotron radiation to leave the storage ring area and reach the beamline area, by means of fixed apertures, adjustable apertures and a full on/off shutter. The FE is an active part of the Personnel Protection System (PSS); it ensures that the optical hutches are safe to access, and it can trigger beam dumps in the storage ring in the presence of alarms. The FE is also part of the Machine Protection System (MPS); it ensures that the equipment itself is correctly cooled, and the energy of the photon beam is properly handled. It also ensures that items that are not compatible with the high power and power density of the photon beam are not exposed to it. Moreover, it guarantees that a correct level of vacuum is maintained, and it intervenes in case of vacuum losses or contamination by sealing off the compromised vacuum compartments. Finally, it can trigger beam dumps in case of severe alarms or malfunction of essential components. The Frontend is also an active part of control system; it is operated through TANGO, the standard control system used throughout MAX IV. The FE has TANGO devices deployed on the beamline and machine control systems, and operates on the machine (green) and beamline (blue) networks. Electrical motors actuating the FE hardware are driven by ICEPAP, the standard motor control system at MAX IV. For TomoWISE, one additional unit is part of the Frontend specification. Although technically part of the beamline, it is included in the scope of supply for the Frontend and is, for the purposes of this document, treated as a Frontend component. This separate unit is located at the end of the Optical Hutch.
