Supply of modular operator consoles and multimedia systems for the distributed control rooms of the Paranal Observatory / FCFT-PR137270-FPE

Request for information (RFI) to investigate the commercially available solutions, the emerging technologies and the suppliers capable of supporting the equipment standardisation and the deployment of distributed control rooms for the Paranal Observatory, in Chile and in Garching (Germany). Particular interest is placed on modular operator console systems and integrated multimedia solutions. Through this RFI, ESO seeks to: - Understand the current state of the market and identify potential vendors with experience and capability to procure, transport and install the equipment both in Chile and Germany. - Assess the maturity, scalability, and suitability of available solutions for distributed observatory operations. - Understand technical integration requirements, standards, and interoperability considerations. - Identify innovative technologies and best practices applicable to next-generation distributed control rooms. - Gather information that will support future procurement activities, technical validation, implementation planning, and risk assessment. - Receive preliminary cost estimates for equipment, integration, installation, and lifecycle support. The RFI will be released end of Q3/2026 to potential suppliers in the ESO Member States and in Chile. The scope of the potential contract includes the supply and on-site installation of the equipment both in Chile and Germany, either by the contractor if present locally, or through a recognized partner in Chile and/or Germany. Based on the outcome of the RFI, ESO will assess the technical and commercial viability of the project and, subject to this assessment, define the appropriate implementation strategy and required timeframe for the required solution. ESO will also define the list of eligible countries before releasing the Call for tender. Based on the outcome, ESO plans to issue the Call for tender in Q2/2027 and will inform the interested suppliers of their eligibility in advance.
