The Institut Max Von Laue-Paul Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is an international research centre specialising in neutron science and technology. A High Flux Reactor delivers neutrons to a suite of some 40 state-of-the-art scientific instruments which are constantly being upgraded. The primary (D2O) and secondary (H2O) cooling systems are separated by the primary heat exchangers. The water in the secondary system transfers the thermal energy from the primary system to the outside. This secondary system is made up of water which has been diverted from the river DRAC. In nominal operating mode, there are one or two pumps in use, with a third emergency pump on standby. The ILL would like to fit one of the pumps with a speed regulator to: § be able to adjust cooling requirements depending on reactor power § control the flow rate of water released into the DRAC (limited to 4500 m3/h).
