The Pellet Launching System (PLS) serves the purpose of delivering solid state hydrogen isotopes (Hydrogen
or Deuterium) to the plasma in the JT-60SA tokamak. This material is either used as fuel to replenish the
particles lost from the plasma or as a trigger to initiate special plasma modes (Edge Localized Modes
(ELMs)). These two tasks require different quantities of material to be injected at different pellet repetition
rates. The PLS must be designed to allow both operational scenarios.
The PLS consists of three main components (schematic overview of entire system in Figure 1):
the extrusion systems which produce the solid state hydrogen isotopes,
the accelerator which propels the solid material and
the transfer system which guides the material to the plasma.
