The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction in the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile, will be the largest Optical Telescope ever constructed. The ELT is located on Cerro Armazones at an altitude of 3000m asl. It hosts a segmented primary mirror with a diameter of about 40m inside a dome that is 80m high. The ELT operates predominantly in the infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum up to wavelengths of a few microns. In this range thermal radiation plays a major role. Therefore, the scientific instruments used to measure and analyse the light collected by the telescope operate at cryogenic temperature. Cooling is done using liquid nitrogen that is distributed via a centralized infrastructure to the different locations of the instruments inside the telescope structure.
