CERN will use the Cryostat, once equipped by CERN with ancillary equipment, to characterize HTS cables, coils and small size magnets. The Cryostat consists of inner pressure vessels, a thermal screen, insulation-blanket layers, an outside vacuum tank and all the related flanges to close the reservoirs. The Cryostat is made of an outside vacuum tank and an inner pressure vessel. A thermal screen that can be actively cooled is located in between the two main components. Insulation-blanket layers are positioned around the pressure vessel and the thermal screen. CERN will immerse the HTS samples either in liquid helium at about 5 K or in vacuum with the pressure vessel cooled by gas circulating in a closed loop. In this second case, another different loop cools the sample, which is not part of the Supply. The Figure 2 presents an overview of the Cryostat.
