The Active Cells Facility within the Target Station building (D02) deals with spent components from the target monolith beam operation. The components handled are primarily the Target Wheel Cask Configuration, the Moderator Reflector Cask Configuration, and the Proton Beam Window Plug. The plugs will be dismantled/size-reduced remotely and sized to fit planned off-site shipment logistics.
During maintenance cycles at ESS, several monolith shielding and cooling blocks must be extracted and temporarily stored in order to access the consumable monolith components. These must be stored until the monolith can be rebuilt. It is expected that none of the shielding and cooling blocks will require maintenance or replacement during the 40-year lifespan of the ESS facility.
Some of these blocks are stored within casks in the High Bay, but there are limited suitable casks that can be used for this. The shielding and cooling blocks cannot be stored by themselves due to the risk of radiation exposure to personnel – and there is limited floor space in the High Bay for additional shielded containers.
If the shielding and cooling blocks were to be stored elsewhere external to the Active Cells Facility, they would require a designated location and similarly shielded containers – which presents significant additional design and radiation safety assessment work.
As a result, a suitable solution would be to store several of these shielding and cooling blocks within the Process Cell.
