Research Facility
ILL
The Institut Laue-Langevin is an international scientific research centre. Its principal tool is a very high neutron flux nuclear reactor. The Environment Group of the ILL's Health Physics, Safety and Environment Service is responsible for the Institute's environmental radiation monitoring. This involves the handling and treatment of contaminated laundry.
ILL’s laundry is contaminated 90% by Cobalt 60 (Co 60) and Silver 110 (Ag 110), in certain cases it is can also contaminated by Tritium (3H), laundry contaminated by tritium is always degassed before washing.
In certain situations, laundry can also be contaminated with alpha.
A Novelec laundry controller controls the laundry and the contamination levels quantified before being sent for washing.
All laundry must be washed in water.
