The most important requirements for the modular ellipsometry system are: - The system must be modular consisting of separate source and receiver modules that can be mounted independently. - Both the light source module and the detector module each must fit within the dimensions 12.5 x 12.5 x 12.5cm (not including connecting cables, but including angular alignment, and angular adjustment stages) - Connecting cables must exit at the back of the light source and detector module - Connecting cables (including optical fibers) must allow a bending radius of 10 cm or less. - The instrument must be able to perform fast spectroscopic ellipsometry o The system must cover a spectral range from 450 nm to 1000 nm o The system must have sufficiently small bandwidth so that 150 wavelengths with non-overlapping FWHM can be selected o A fully automated measurement of the ellipsometric angles  (psi) and  (delta) over at least 40 wavelengths must be possible within 5 s o Software for data evaluation must include at the very minimum: procedures for calculating real and imaginary refractive indices, homogeneous layer thicknesses, features to model and fit refractive index gradients and multilayer structures, and the possibility to export raw data in plain text format o Remote control and operation of the ellipsometric measurements is necessary.
