This type of braiding machine enables the braiding of woven insulation around a core of CERN superconducting cables. The most common insulation material to be used is glass fiber and the core is a sensitive superconductive cable. The machine shall be flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of fiber yarns, thin shielding metallic wire, metallic tape, wires ribbon and thickness as well as core wires, thickness and dimensions. While controlling the waving pattern and select the tension of the wire braided.
In addition of the braiding machine, a winding machine is requested. This type of winding machine enables the creation of bobbins (or carriers) of fiber or metallic wires, to be used for braiding around the superconducting cable. The machine shall be flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of yarns per carriers and yarn thickness. The wire tension on the carrier must be tunable and adapted to fragile fiber. The system shall be compatible with fiber really sensitive to friction. This machine is ideally expected to be functional at CERN by the end of 2024 or beginning of 2025. Longer delays may be envisaged after justification and agreement by CERN.
