Vacuum measuring technique is of special importance in the FAIR and GSI accelerator facilities. On the one hand, monitoring the vacuum pressures in the beam tubes is indispensable for the assessment of the generated vacuum quality, which defines the beam losses and thus ultimately the beam life time. On the other hand, vacuum measuring techniques will be used as an input for the interlock system of the machines and is important for the detection and localization of potential leaks. Reliability and durability of the vacuum measurement technology used are therefore important prerequisites for trouble-free operation of the accelerator vacuum systems. The vacuum measurement at FAIR and GSI involves the measurement of pressures ranging from atmospheric pressure down to the operating pressure required in the particular machines. Operating pressures GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH Planckstraße 1 64291 Darmstadt www.gsi.de Seite 2 von 2 33/RV_Extraktor-Steuergeräte_2021 range from the upper to the deep UHV range (depending on the respective machine). Vacuum pressures of ≤ 10-11 mbar are partly generated and maintained in the bakeable ring sections of the SIS100 as well as in the high energy beam transfer sections from and to the SIS100. As only hot cathode gauges of extractor type allow pressure measurements in this vacuum range (see ISO 3529-3 for gauge classification), this specific gauge type is planned to be used for monitoring the vacuum conditions in these beam lines. Due to radiation environmental issues, the FAIR and GSI facilities require vacuum gauges without on-board electronics on the gauge head (i.e. passive gauges), only. The controllers for the gauges will be located in dedicated supply rooms properly shielded from the high radiation areas of the accelerator tunnels. The controllers must be compatible with remote connection to the gauges with the use of cable lengths of up to 100 m. It shall provide analogue
