What does Big Science Sweden do?
Big Science Sweden enables Swedish companies to supply equipment, materials and services to Big Science research facilities. In the short term, we are increasing Sweden’s industrial return, and in the longer term, we are building up the knowledge and expertise that drive technological development, skills enhancement, internationalisation, and growth in Swedish companies.

Knowledge and innovation capacity, driven by Big Science
Sweden’s official Industry Liaison Organisation, ILO
As Sweden’s official Industry Liaison Organisation, ILO, Big Science Sweden works to increase industrial return for Swedish companies. ‘Industrial return’ means that companies receive orders from the facilities that Sweden co-finances to a value that is proportional to Sweden’s funding. Much of this work involves identifying suitable companies and showing opportunities for business and technological development.
Curiosity, creativity and innovative thinking are important components in Big Science
Big Science generates high-tech development and innovation, and is an arena where researchers and engineers can meet and challenge each other to test boundaries and create tomorrow’s technology.
Storskaliga forskningsanläggningar driver teknikutveckling och löser ofta svåra tekniska utmaningar.
Big Science Sweden is the link between Swedish industry and Big Science
Our vision: Sweden – a leading international driver of Big Science technology
Our various arenas are meeting places for industry, researchers, institutes and research facilities, helping to establish long-term relationships and collaborations. We arrange, for example, Swedish pavilions at large Big Science trade fairs, regular breakfast meetings in the form of Big Science Mornings, and Business Trips to CERN and ITER. We also arrange training programmes, and we are active in our ILO work, holding meetings and activities out in the facilities. See the results in our Big Science Sweden In Brief.
Big Science Sweden helps Swedish industry with:
- Business contacts, R&D and skills development
- International collaborations and networks
- International marketing
- University collaboration that promotes development
- Tech transfer – technology at the facilities can be commercialised and form part of the solutions to global challenges
Network of high-tech suppliers
Since 2018, Big Science Sweden has built up a network of highly qualified suppliers of technology. The handbook, The Swedish Guide, lists these Swedish companies, all of which have the capacity to supply advanced services and products to research facilities all over the world. The Guide is aimed at buyers and technical managers at research facilities who are looking for Swedish suppliers and Swedish academic contributions. The information is also searchable in an online database here on the website.
Big Science Sweden Conference 2019
High-tech companies, institutes and academia met with ESS, European XFEL, CERN, MAX IV, and ITER/Fusion for Energy at the Big Science Sweden Conference 2019 in Lund. The event proved very popular, and the conference was fully booked. At the two-day event, over 250 delegates from ten different countries met and held discussions. Participants included 90 represenatives from Swedish industry, 70 from academic establishments and research institutes, and over 50 from international research facilities. The research facilities were looking to establish contacts with Swedish high-tech companies, universities and institutes, with the prospect of future business. Documentation, with interviews and photos.
Det var första gången i Sverige som ett antal europeiska forskningsanläggningar, svenska universitet och institut, och svenska högteknologiska företag, samlades till en gemensam Big Science-konferens.
